The Recinto Ferial de Madrid, IFEMA, has become over the years in a great business centre in Madrid. Located in a privileged area, just a few kilometres from Barajas airport and very close to the city’s centre, brings together every year thousands and thousands of entrepreneurs from all over the world, making Madrid a true business capital.
IFEMA has its roots in the old Palacio de Exposiones that existed in the Castellana Avenue, a venue that lost its meaning as the business activity increased and the space available was limited and could not meet the demand. To solve this problem, in 1988 the construction began of the first 8 pavilion of what is now IFEMA, in the Campo de las Naciones.
The first halls were inaugurated in 1991, but soon was necessary to extend the business centre as the demand for fairs and congresses obliged it to offer more space to exhibitors. Today, the business centre receives each year more than a hundred fairs, ranging from all business sectors in which Spain participates in, from fashion to tourism, and the art or nautical world.
Overall, economic activity is around 1.5% of gross domestic product (GDP) of the Community of Madrid and has helped build one of the most prosperous business areas of Madrid, which extends from the city centre, on the Paseo de la Castellana and Nuevos Ministerios, the area of Avenida America, Arturo Soria, towards Barajas.
In the neighbouring areas, many different services have flourished be it sports, such as the Golf Club Olivar de la Hinojosa, or entertainment, spas, restaurants and some of the best business hotels in the capital. One of the hotel portfolios that stands out in the IFEMA area, is the hotel chain Confortel Hotels, with 4 accommodation for business in Madrid:
