Christmas in Majorca

It may sound hasty but, Christmas is just around the corner. Holidays once more. It’s a relief, although packing your suitcase at this time of year almost inevitably means filling it with winter coats. But traveling can never be a drag, and there are warmer options than Berlin or Vienna. A good alternative, for example, is to spend the Christmas holidays in Majorca. The island offers a mild climate, well into January, and many cultural proposals to enjoy a few days in the Mediterranean.

Why choose Majorca for Christmas? The truth is that, it is a relatively unknown destination for the winter months, a quiet option, suitable for traveling with children since the offer of services and accommodation for families in Majorca is broad. In addition, in recent years, due to the strong commitment of the island to extend its tourist season, many hotels for adults in Majorca and city hotels have designed really interesting plans: dinners for groups, Christmas parties, art exhibitions, shopping tours, street markets… A different way to attract tourism that has little or nothing to do with those tourists that visit the island every summer.

The accommodations that are most active in this regard, are those located in the centre of Palma or along its bay, in Cala Estancia or Playa de Palma, Illetas or even Andratx and Port Adriano. They are destinations more attractive to travellers in the medium and high economic  purchasing power, that decide to travel at this time of year, senior couples that look to enjoy a different experience during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

The culture and shopping are elements of the complementary offer that make Majorca an interesting destination, beyond the natural characteristics of its location, just over two hours to almost any European capital, with excellent air travel connections to all of them and with prices that are more than affordable for the British, French, Swiss or German.

The new Majorca

Majorca has always been a major tourist attraction in the Mediterranean, capable of competing with suggestive destinations such as the beautiful Sardinia, the captivating Sicily, the Croatian coast or the exotic Greek Islands. Although for some years, the incorporation of new proposals such as Egypt or Tunisia, somewhat undermined its true potential, this iconic island, chosen by celebrities from all around the world to have a second home, has revived once again to lead the holidays in the Mediterranean.

The new Majorca speaks of a more complete travel experience, of sun and sand, but also of culture, art festivals, classical music, opera, open air cinema and traditional festivities full of tradition and history.

Port Adriano majorca

First class ports and marinas catch the attention of the most elegant yachts in the Mediterranean and its coasts bring together the most representative names of the great fortunes of Europe.

The Copa del Rey de Vela continues to gather, year after year, the most notorious of Madrid’s society in Majorca; Puerto Portals is the most fashionable place of the summer and Port Adriano appears as a new stop for those looking to live a luxury holiday in the Mediterranean.

The city of Palma de Mallorca leads this rebirth, a city that aims to become a first class destination, 365 days a year, with leisure plans that go far beyond the traditional sun and beach holiday that dominated the island until recently.

All eyes on Palma de Mallorca

Playa de Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca is, for a large number of European tourists, the capital of the Mediterranean summer. Its beautiful rocky coves, cliffs and fine white sand, surrounding by planes, small pine tree hills or the impressive Serra de Tramuntana, make up for a landscape that thousands of people dream off throughout the year.

With the arrival of the typical holiday months like July, August and September, Majorca and its capital open their doors to receive tourists. Before them, Palma offers them the charm of its exceptional climate and the pampering of its unique services: the city is full of boutiques, restaurants of all kinds, theatres, nightlife and many place of interest.

A simple drive through the coastline is an experience at any time of day: the Cathedral of Palma overlooking the centre of the city, next to the majestic Almudaina Palace, facing the Port of Palma and the sea.

The walking tours through the capital of Majorca are numerous and diverse: there are tours along the courtyards of historical houses and palaces in the centre of the city, which are still inhabited today. Tapas and wine tours in which to enjoy the typical products of the island. Other tours include shopping in some of the most prestigious shops in Europe, or to learn the art of the museums and galleries… Each one is a different city proposal, suitable for all tastes and times of day.

Hotel en Santa Ponsa

To enjoy the full splendour of Palma the summer months -specially August- are simply the best. The heat is at its maximum, but the city is full of fun plans: concerts, traditional celebrations, open air cinema in front of Palma’s Cathedral, night shopping and markets, sailing competitions…. The touristic heart of the Mediterranean is working full time!

The accommodation in the capital is varied and many are those that prefer to book a hotel in the Bay of Palma Nova, or a room in Playa de Palma in order to enjoy the best of the city, without giving up on the commodity of being steps away from the beach.

For those that also look for a quiet destination close to Palma, a good option is to book a hotel in Santa Ponsa, in the Costa de la Calma area, that is perfectly connected with Palma via motorway, and the journey by car to the city and the airport takes approximately 20 minutes. In return, at this destination, the traveller can enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets on the island.
